Equity

Equity = Balance + Unrealized P/L. When all positions are closed, equity equals balance. When positions are open, equity floats with market price. Equity matters more than balance for risk management because it determines free marginmargin, margin level, and whether a margin call fires. A profitable trader with large open losses has the same balance as before but lower equity, and may be closer to margin call than they realize.
