Margin

Also known as: Required Margin, Initial Margin

Margin is the portion of your equity locked up as collateral while a position is open. Required margin is calculated as (notional position size) / leverage. For a 1-lot EURUSD trade at 1:100 leverage, required margin is roughly $1,000 of the base-currency value. Margin is not a fee; it is returned to free margin when the position closes. Distinct from used margin (locked), free margin (available for new trades), and margin level (equity / used margin × 100%).
